History of the temple

The temple is believed to have been originally established by King Bhadrasen and later reconstructed during the reign of Raja Bhoj. Archaeological studies reveal idols of Lord Shiva, Parvati, Vishnu, and Ganesha dating back to the Parmar dynasty (9th–13th century). Over centuries, the temple has remained an important center of devotion in Ujjain, attracting thousands of pilgrims every year.

Significance of the temple

Kalabhairav is worshipped as the city’s divine guardian, often called the Kotwal of Ujjain. Unique to this temple, devotees offer alcohol to the deity, a ritual that symbolizes his fierce energy and protective powers. The idol is adorned with a traditional Scindia turban, a practice maintained by the royal family of Gwalior for generations. The temple is considered highly auspicious for overcoming fear, obstacles, and negative energies.
