Chintaman Ganesh Temple

About Temple

Chintaman Ganesh Temple, located about 6 km from the sacred Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh), is one of the oldest and most revered shrines of Lord Ganesha in India. The temple houses three self-manifested (swayambhu) forms of Lord Ganesh – Chintaman, Ichhaman, and Siddhivinayak, each worshipped for removing worries, fulfilling wishes, and granting success. Every Wednesday of the Chaitra month, a grand fair is held here, drawing thousands of devotees.

History of the temple

According to ancient legends, the temple was first sanctified during the exile of Lord Ram, Mata Sita, and Lakshman. It is believed that Chintaman Ganesha was established by Shri Ram and Sita Mata, while Ichhaman and Siddhivinayak forms were consecrated by Lakshman and Sita Mata. For centuries, devotees have believed that sincere worship at this temple frees one from worries, grants desired boons, and ensures success in endeavors

Significance of the temple

The temple holds deep cultural importance for the local farming community. After harvesting crops in the Chaitra month, farmers first offer their produce to Lord Ganesha here before selling it in the market, believing it removes obstacles and brings prosperity. Devotees also perform unique rituals such as drawing a reverse swastika and tying sacred vow threads, seeking fulfillment of their wishes.

Architecture of the temple

The temple’s origin dates back to the Parmar period (9th–13th century), with significant renovations later under the Peshwas and Ahilyabai Holkar. Built according to Sri Yantra principles, the temple features domes adorned with lions and an ancient sanctum where the idol of Lord Ganesha is partly sunken into the ground. This rare feature adds to the temple’s uniqueness, symbolizing humility and divine grounding.
