Sri Ranganath Temple

About Temple

Shri Ranganath Mandir, also called Rang Ji Mandir, is located in Vrindavan, Mathura. This prominent temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is among the largest in the city. The temple is known for its South Indian-style worship traditions, maintained by priests from the South Indian Brahmin lineage.

History of the temple

The temple was founded under the guidance of Swami Rangacharya, a revered Sanskrit scholar and guru, and constructed by Seth Govind Das and Radha Krishna. Its construction started in 1845 and was completed in 1851, taking six years to build with an estimated cost of 45 lakh rupees.

Significance of the temple

The temple holds special spiritual importance due to the Vaikunth Darwaza, the seventh gate, which is opened only on Vaikunth Ekadashi. It is believed that passing through this sacred gate on that day grants liberation (Moksha) to the devotee.

Architecture of the temple

The temple’s architecture is inspired by the Sri Rangam Temple of South India, blending both South and North Indian styles. The design features rectangular courtyards on all four sides of the main shrine. The eastern and western gates display exquisite Jaipur-style stone carvings. Inside the sanctum, Lord Ranganath Ji is depicted reclining on the serpent Shesha, with Goddess Lakshmi seated at his feet.
