🌊 The Meeting at the Yamuna River

Long ago, the great sage Parashar was traveling on a pilgrimage when he reached the sacred banks of the Yamuna River. Wanting to cross, he requested a nearby fisherman for help. The fisherman asked his daughter, Matsyagandha, to row the sage across the river.

Humble and devoted, Matsyagandha welcomed the sage into her small boat and began rowing gently through the calm waters. As they journeyed, Rishi Parashar was struck by her simplicity, grace, and purity of heart.

🌼 The Divine Transformation

Moved by divine inspiration, Parashar expressed his feelings to Matsyagandha. Surprised, she replied softly,

“O revered sage, you are a great ascetic and a master of sacred knowledge, while I am but a simple girl of humble birth, with a fisherman’s scent. How can there be any bond between us?”

The sage smiled kindly and said,

“You are no ordinary girl, my child. The divine will has brought us together for a higher purpose.”

To ease her doubts, Rishi Parashar used his divine powers to bless her with a heavenly fragrance and radiant beauty. Her body now emitted a soft, lotus-like scent, earning her the future name “Yojanagandha” — one whose fragrance spreads for miles.

Still modest, Matsyagandha requested,

“O holy one, please let our union remain unseen by the world. Let this moment happen in purity and secrecy.”

With his spiritual might, Parashar created a veil of mystical fog and darkness around the river, turning day into twilight.

Even then, Matsyagandha worried,

“If I bear a child, how will I face my father and society?”

Parashar reassured her gently,

“Do not fear. You will remain pure, untouched in spirit, and your virginity will not be lost in the worldly sense. You shall be known as Satyavati, a woman of truth and dignity. You will give birth to a son of divine brilliance, whose wisdom will guide the world for all time.”

With these blessings, Parashar departed, and soon after, Satyavati gave birth to a radiant child on an island in the Yamuna River. The child was Krishna Dvaipayana, known to the world as Ved Vyas Ji — “the Compiler of the Vedas.”

True to his divine purpose, Ved Vyas Ji went on to perform extraordinary deeds. He divided the single body of Vedic knowledge into four parts — Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda — to make the wisdom accessible to all.
