In the ancient kingdom of Magadha, there once lived a noble and virtuous woman named Charumati in a small town called Kundini. Charumati was known for her gentle nature, compassion, and unwavering devotion to her husband and the Divine Mother Lakshmi. Her home was filled with peace, kindness, and faith.
One night, as Charumati slept after her evening prayers, Goddess Lakshmi appeared before her in a radiant dream, adorned in gold and divine ornaments. The celestial glow of the Goddess filled the room with a golden light. Smiling gracefully, the Goddess said:
“O Charumati, your devotion has pleased Me. On the coming Friday of the Shravana month, observe the Varalakshmi Vrat with faith and purity. Worship Me with full heart and sincerity, and I shall bless you and your family with health, wealth, and everlasting happiness.”
When Charumati awoke, she was overwhelmed with joy and gratitude. She immediately shared the divine message with her husband and the women of the town.
Following the Goddess’s instruction, Charumati and the women of her town prepared for the Varalakshmi fast with devotion. They cleaned their homes, set up altars with sacred kalash (pots symbolizing Lakshmi), and decorated them with turmeric, kumkum, mango leaves, and fresh flowers.
They tied threads of prosperity on their wrists and offered fruits, sweets, and flowers to Goddess Lakshmi while chanting her holy names. Devotional songs and prayers filled the air, and the women prayed not only for their own happiness but also for the well-being of their families and the prosperity of all.
Pleased by Charumati’s sincerity and devotion, Mahalakshmi appeared again, blessing her and all who had observed the fast. Instantly, their homes shone with divine radiance. Gold and jewels appeared miraculously, symbolizing not just material wealth but spiritual abundance as well.
From that day forward, the Varalakshmi Vrat became a sacred tradition. Women across the land began to observe it with love and devotion, seeking the grace of Goddess Lakshmi for health, peace, and prosperity in their families.
The story of Charumati teaches that true wealth is born from faith, purity, and devotion. The fast is not merely a ritual—it is a heartfelt offering of gratitude to the Goddess who sustains all creation.
