According to legend, Goddess Sita emerged from the Earth when King Janaka was ploughing his field. For this reason, she is also known as Bhoomiputri (Daughter of the Earth). Sita’s birth is seen as a divine blessing, and her life represents purity, patience, and unwavering faith.
On this day, devotees observe fasts, recite verses from the Ramayana, and offer prayers to Mata Sita and Lord Rama. Temples are beautifully decorated, and special pujas are held to honor the divine couple.
Sita Navami carries profound spiritual and moral significance. It is a day of devotion, purity, and gratitude toward the divine feminine power.

The sacred story of Sita’s birth is deeply rooted in the Ramayana and ancient folklore of Mithila.
Once upon a time, in the kingdom of Mithila (modern-day Janakpur in Nepal), King Janaka ruled with wisdom and compassion. However, his kingdom faced a severe drought for many years. The lands had dried up, and the people were suffering from famine.
To end this calamity, sages advised King Janaka to plough the fields himself, as an act of devotion that would please Mother Earth (Bhumi Devi).
Obeying the advice, the king took up a plough and began tilling the soil. As he ploughed, the tip of the plough struck something buried deep in the earth — a golden casket. When opened, it revealed a beautiful infant girl glowing with divine light.
The king was overwhelmed with joy and recognized the baby as a divine gift from the Earth. Since he had no children, he lovingly adopted her and named her Sita, meaning “the furrow” — symbolizing the place where she was found.
Sita grew up in the palace of Mithila under the care of King Janaka and Queen Sunaina. She was taught the principles of Dharma, compassion, and wisdom, and grew into a woman of unmatched grace and virtue.
When the time came for her marriage, King Janaka organized a Swayamvara, declaring that whoever could lift and string Lord Shiva’s mighty bow (Pinaka) would win Sita’s hand in marriage.
Many princes tried and failed — until Lord Rama, the prince of Ayodhya, lifted the bow effortlessly and broke it in half. Thus, Sita and Rama were united in marriage, symbolizing the eternal bond of virtue and devotion.
Their life together — filled with trials like exile, separation, and Sita’s abduction by Ravana — stands as a timeless story of faith, strength, and righteousness.
On Sita Navami, devotees remember her life and virtues, worship her with devotion, and pray for the same patience and inner strength that she embodied.
Morning Purification:
Begin the day with a bath and wear clean traditional clothes. Set up a clean altar for the puja.
Install Deities:
Place idols or pictures of Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Hanuman Ji on a sacred platform facing east.
Offerings:
Offer flowers, fruits, betel leaves, rice, and sweets — especially Kheer and fruits. Avoid tamasic food.
Recitations:
Chant Sita Chalisa, Ram Raksha Stotra, or read chapters from the Ramayana describing Sita’s birth and virtues.
Fasting:
Married women observe a day-long fast and break it after the evening prayers. Some observe a Nirjala fast (without water) as a mark of devotion.
Charity:
Donating food, clothes, or essentials to the poor and needy is considered highly meritorious on this day.
Aarti & Prayers:
Conclude the puja with Aarti of Lord Rama and Sita Mata, seeking blessings for peace and prosperity in the family.
