Who is Lord Dhanvantari?

In Sanatan Dharma, Lord Dhanvantari is worshipped as the divine physician and the founder of Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of holistic medicine. He is believed to be the 12th incarnation of Lord Vishnu and is honored as the Lord of Health and Immortality.

According to the scriptures, Lord Dhanvantari appeared during the Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean), emerging from the cosmic waters holding a pot of Amrita (nectar of immortality) in one hand and sacred herbs in the others. His appearance signified the divine revelation of healing knowledge for the welfare of all beings.

In iconography, He is depicted with four arms — carrying a conch, leech, pot of nectar, and sacred herbs. His luminous form radiates peace and divine healing energy, reminding us that health is the truest form of wealth.

The Story of Lord Dhanvantari

During the great cosmic churning (Samudra Manthan), the gods and demons sought the nectar of immortality. As the ocean churned, Lord Dhanvantari appeared with a golden pot filled with Amrita, bestowing health and vitality to all who sought refuge in Him.

In another legend, He incarnated as a prince of Kashi, born to King Dhanva through the grace of Lord Vishnu. In that form, He revealed the secrets of Ayurveda, guiding humanity on how to preserve health and attain balance of body, mind, and soul.

He is regarded as the first divine teacher of Ayurveda, the one who passed the sacred science to sages like Sushruta, the father of surgery. Through His wisdom, humanity learned that true well-being lies in harmony with nature and spiritual consciousness.
