Banke Bihari Temple

About Temple

Banke Bihari Temple, located in Biharipura, Vrindavan (Mathura district, Uttar Pradesh), is one of the most famous and revered temples of Lord Krishna. Dedicated to the enchanting form of Shri Banke Bihari Ji, the temple draws devotees from across the world, who believe that a visit here brings divine blessings, joy, and success in life.

History of the temple

The temple was originally established in 1864 by Swami Haridas, the great saint and devotee of Lord Krishna and Radha. It is believed that, moved by his deep devotion, Shri Radha Krishna manifested in Nidhivan before him. Their divine beauty was so overwhelming that Swami Haridas requested them to appear in a more accessible form. In response, they assumed the unified form of Shri Banke Bihari Ji, which is worshipped to this day. Later, in 1921, the temple was reconstructed by the followers of Swami Haridas, and it continues to be a central place of devotion in Vrindavan.

Significance of the temple

Banke Bihari Temple holds a unique place in Vrindavan’s spiritual heritage. The deity of Banke Bihari Ji is believed to embody both Radha and Krishna together, radiating eternal love and bliss. Devotees believe that just one glimpse (darshan) of Banke Bihari Ji fills the heart with divine joy and removes sorrows, obstacles, and worldly attachments. Unlike other temples, here the deity is not woken up early in the morning, but only at Mangala Aarti on Janmashtami—symbolizing the Lord’s childlike, playful nature.

Architecture of the temple

The temple reflects the charm of traditional Rajasthani architecture, with intricately carved arches, pillars, and detailed designs that add to its beauty. The sanctum houses the enchanting black stone idol of Banke Bihari Ji, whose captivating gaze is said to hold devotees spellbound. To prevent the overwhelming divine energy from overpowering the devotees, a curtain is drawn every few minutes during darshan—making the experience unique and spiritually uplifting.
