Chausath Yogini Temple is situated in Mitawali village, Morena district, about 40 km from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. This ancient tantric temple is dedicated to 64 Yoginis, represented by 64 stone idols, each with a distinct name and power. Known as a center for tantric rituals in its prime, it was once referred to as a “Tantric University.” The Archaeological Survey of India recognizes it as a protected historical monument.

History of the temple

Built around the 10th century by the Kachchhapaghata dynasty, the temple is perched atop an isolated hill nearly 100 feet high. Its unique circular design consists of 64 chambers housing the Yogini idols. The temple’s architecture is so distinctive that it is often compared to the Indian Parliament Building, and some scholars believe it may have inspired the Parliament’s circular layout.

The temple’s circular structure spans approximately 170 feet in diameter, with 64 small chambers for the Yogini idols. A central sanctum features slabs and openings designed to collect rainwater into an underground storage system. The temple rests on 101 robust pillars, constructed to withstand earthquakes and ensure long-lasting stability. Visitors reach the site via a climb of around 200 steps, adding to the experience of devotion and exploration.
