Dwarkadhish Gopal Mandir, one of the most prominent temples in Ujjain, is dedicated to Lord Krishna in his form as Dwarkadhish, the King of Dwarka. It is considered the second-largest temple in the city and attracts thousands of devotees throughout the year. The temple is especially vibrant during Janmashtami when elaborate rituals, devotional singing, and cultural programs are held. Another unique celebration here is the grand “Harihar Parva,” where the symbolic meeting of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu is observed with great devotion.

History of the temple

The temple dates back to the mid-19th century and was commissioned by Maharani Baiza Bai Shinde, a devout queen of the Scindia dynasty. Construction began around 1844 and was completed in 1852 with the installation of the main deity. Over the years, the temple became an important spiritual center for Vaishnavas as well as Shaivas due to its unique tradition of linking the worship of Lord Krishna and Lord Mahakal. The spacious courtyard has historically served as a resting place for saints, pilgrims, and devotees during major festivals like Simhastha Kumbh Mela.

The temple is known for its distinct tradition during Krishna Janmashtami, where the regular evening aarti is suspended for five days. This practice symbolizes the divine belief that during this time, child Krishna remains awake in joy and play, and thus the temple mirrors his divine leela. The temple is a remarkable example of Maratha-style architecture. Its sanctum is constructed from beautifully carved marble and adorned with silver-plated doors, reflecting both elegance and grandeur. The temple not only enshrines Lord Krishna but also features idols of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Garuda, highlighting a confluence of deities.
