Madan Mohan Temple

About Temple

The Madan Mohan Temple, situated near the sacred Yamuna River in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, is one of the most revered and ancient temples dedicated to Lord Krishna. It is considered the oldest temple in Vrindavan and holds special importance among the Sapt Devalaya (seven main temples of Vrindavan). The temple is associated with the worship of Madan Mohan, a form of Lord Krishna who enchants even Kamadeva, the god of love.

History of the temple

The temple’s origin is linked to Sanatan Goswami, a close associate of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who resided nearby and guided devotees in worship. The main deity was originally installed by Advaita Acharya in the 16th century and later entrusted to Sanatan Goswami. During Aurangzeb’s reign, the original idol was shifted to Karauli, Rajasthan, for safety, where it is still worshipped today. The present temple in Vrindavan houses a replica of the original deity.

Significance of the temple

The temple is a prime pilgrimage site for Vaishnav devotees and followers of Gaudiya Vaishnavism. It is believed that worshipping at Madan Mohan Temple helps devotees overcome material desires and develop pure devotion to Krishna. During Kartik month, the temple witnesses special rituals, and thousands of devotees gather to participate in the auspicious Aarti and offer lamps along the Yamuna.

Architecture of the temple

Built in red sandstone, the temple stands out with its simple yet graceful design. Perched on a hillock near the Yamuna, the temple provides a panoramic view of Vrindavan. The tall, shikhara-style spire is its main highlight, reflecting early North Indian temple architecture. The sanctum houses the deity of Madan Mohan along with Radha Rani and Lalita Sakhi, symbolizing eternal divine love.
