Shri Jugal Kishore Ji Temple

About Temple

Shri Jugal Kishore Ji Temple, located on the sacred Keshi Ghat of Vrindavan, is one of the most revered temples dedicated to the divine couple, Shri Radha and Shri Krishna. The temple is celebrated for its serene spiritual atmosphere and its association with the playful pastimes of the Lord on the banks of the Yamuna. In the evenings, the temple glows with the light of countless diyas, and the reflections on the Yamuna create a divine ambience that draws hundreds of devotees and pilgrims.

History of the temple

Counted among the oldest temples of Vrindavan, Shri Jugal Kishore Ji Temple was established during the early 17th century. Historical accounts suggest it was commissioned under the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir, making it one of the earliest Vaishnav temples constructed after the Govind Dev, Madan Mohan, and Gopinath temples. Over centuries, the temple has withstood time and still stands as a testimony to the deep devotion and architectural brilliance of Vrindavan’s spiritual heritage.

Significance of the temple

The temple holds immense spiritual significance as it stands near Keshi Ghat, where Shri Krishna slew the mighty horse-demon Keshi and freed the people of Vrindavan from his terror. Keshi Ghat remains one of the holiest bathing places in Vrindavan, where devotees take sacred dips in the Yamuna before offering prayers at the temple. Every evening, the Yamuna Aarti at Keshi Ghat, accompanied by the lighting of lamps in Shri Jugal Kishore Ji Temple, fills the entire area with devotion and divine energy.

Architecture of the temple

Built entirely of red sandstone, the temple is an architectural masterpiece that reflects the grandeur of early Vrindavan temples. Its tall shikhara (spire) dominates the skyline, and the temple’s ornate entrance is adorned with exquisite carvings of floral patterns, birds, and divine figures. The main sanctum houses the deities of Shri Radha and Krishna in their eternal jugal (divine couple) form. The spacious courtyard and prayer hall allow devotees to gather in large numbers, especially during festivals. The temple’s design closely resembles the architectural styles of other historic temples of Vrindavan, showcasing a harmonious blend of devotion and artistry.
